Scotland

Is a land of mountains and lakes with a population of about five million.

Men in Skirts:

The kilt is a piece of clothing which many Schottish men wear on special occasions. Some of them wear a sporran with a kilt; it is a kind of large purse that hangs from a belt. The typical coloured pattern is called Tartan and they are connected with different Scottish families or clans. In 1749 the English government banned kilts because they though tartans was a symbol of Scottish independence.

Food:

The most famous Scottish food is haggis. A sheep’s stomach which is packed with bits of meat, onion, oats, spices and salt. Porridge is another typical Scottish dish, made with boiling oats in mil or water. Also shortbread is a delicious butter biscuit, and its very good Aberdeen Agus beef and salmon too.

Iconic Places:

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, everyone come to see the Castle and the famous streets. Many famous writers and philosophers have lived in there.

The Scottish Highlands are the mountains and valleys in the northern half of the country. Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Scotland and the Loch Ness is the most famous. The tallest mountain in the British Isles, is Ben Nevis which is in the Highlands.
Glasgow and Aberdeen are other Scottish cities that are famous too.

Iconic creatures

The Loch Ness Monster is the most famous inhabitant of Scotland! There is a legend that says that there is a monster living in the Loch Ness, for sure that it’s only a legend but its a certainly good for the Scottish tourist industry, because many people go to the Loch Ness only for the legend.

Dolly the sheep is another famous Scottish animal. She was the first mammal cloned at a scientific institute.

Iconic People:

William Wallace and Robert he Bruce were 2 great Scottish heroes who fought for the independence from England in the Middle Ages. Mary Queen of Scots was a famous queen that had a really sad and dramatic life for many different reasons. Robert Burns is Scotland’s national poet. He died when he was only 37 but his poems live on. He wrote the words of ‘Auld Lang Syne’                                                                                                                                                                                       There are many other famous Scottish people. Writers like Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Sherlock Holmes. And singers like Susan Boyle, actors like Sean Connery, who played James Bond. And many famous scientist and inventors for example, James Watt, Alexander Bell, Alexander Fleming and John Logie Baird.

Sports:

Football it’s a really famous sport, the two best-known Scottish football teams are the Rangers and Celtics. Golf is another popular sport. The Highland Games is a typical Scottish sporting event, they are like the Olympics.

Celebrations:

New Year is more important tan Christmas in Scotland. They celebrate the ‘Hogmanay’ on 31st of December. There are street parties in many cities.

Burns Night takes place on the birthday of Robert Burns, 25th January. People read poems and sing songs by Burns.
